Going off to college can be a trying experience - even for your taxes. If you're attending college at an out-of-state school, how do know where to file your state tax return?
Where you learn is not where you live.
Technically, anyway. Normally, you file your state income tax return for the state in which you live. Going to school in a different state from your home state is not considered a permanent address change. Even if you are attending college out-of-state, you must still file taxes for your home state.
The exception would be if you earn income in the state you are attending college. In that case, you would have to file a return in both states - the state where you are from and the state where you are going to college and earned the income.
